He is the twenty-year-old son of Andrea “Matiu” Matteoli, a former elite alpine snowboarder with 17 World Cup podiums to his name and later a coach – among others – of Ross Rebagliati, Olympic giant slalom champion in Nagano 1998. At the Torino 2006 Games, Andrea also served as snowboard track director. Ian first stepped onto a board at the age of two and, following his family’s moves, grew up between New Zealand, France and the United States, while also finding time to become a skilled skateboarder.
In December 2022, he finished third in the Big Air World Cup event at Copper Mountain, becoming the first Italian ever to step onto a World Cup podium in this discipline. In February 2023, a ruptured spleen and emergency surgery appeared to halt his rise. However, he fought back and, in the 2024/2025 winter, claimed two second places, securing the runner-up spot in the overall Big Air World Cup standings. At the end of March, he also battled for a medal at the World Championships in Engadin, finishing seventh. At Milano Cortina, he can truly dream big.
